Exam Preparation Week 2

Updated: Sep 10, 2021

As we move closer towards the exam, hopefully students have started their bound reference. This week, we will take a more in depth look at bound references and in particular; how should we break down specific parts of the course into our bound reference?

Disclaimer

These are recommendations and not everyone learns in the same way, so take all advice with a grain of salt.

Topics and Subtopics

Obviously, there are 4 broad units that your exam will cover. Data Analysis and Business Maths are the core units, however, each student has to also pick 1 elective out of Trigonometry, Matrices, Networks and Graphs & Relations.

I suggest thinking of these units as topics and each specific theory involved in topics as subtopics. These subtopics are typically the focus of one or a number of subchapters in your textbook.

For example, If we look at the topic Business Maths, it can be broken down into the following subtopics:

  • Sequences (Vn+1=Vn+B)

  • Linear Growth & Decay

  • Simple Interest Depreciation

  • Geometric Growth and Decay

  • Compound Interest Reducing Balance Depreciation

  • Nominal and Effective Interest Rates

  • Interest Only Loans

  • Annuities

  • Perpetuities

  • Compound Interest with Regular Additions to the Principle

Breaking down subtopics

Now that we can distinguish between the overall topic and the specific subtopics, we can discuss how I think students should breakdown subtopics in their notes.

Good luck!
